A Chat With Hannah of @laviebohemehandcrafted

Q: How long have you been creating macrame pieces?

A: I have been doing macrame for 3 years now!

Q: What inspired you to start?

A: I was inspired to make my first plant hanger when my plant obsession started to grow and I needed more space for my plants! I was on a budget and have always loved crafts and DIY projects, so I found a video on YouTube and made my first plant hanger. And everything just started to grow from there!

Q: Where do you draw your inspiration from?

A: I get a lot of inspiration from following other makers/artists. Most of them are fiber related, but I also just love following artist in general because I love seeing what inspires them and I love seeing everyone’s unique style. I also like to put my phone down and brainstorm ideas of what I want to create next. I don’t want anyone else’s art to heavily influence what I’m doing because I want to make sure my pieces are original!

Q: Where are you located?

A: I’m located in Salem, Oregon

Q: Any favorite artist/makers you’d like to shout out that inspire you?

A: I honestly think there’s too many to count! I have found such inspiration in the macrame community and have grown so close to everyone who shares the same passion! I’m so lucky to be apart of such an amazing medium and community!

Q: Any favorite yarn or material brand?

A: I love getting material from Rachel at The Lark’s Head Shop (@thelarksheadshop), she’s probably my main source of fiber! I also love Cindy’s supplies at Niroma Studio (@niromastudio). And Janis from Unfettered Co (@unfetteredco) also has amazing fiber!

Q: Anything else you want to add?

A: The best advice I could give anyone is to just go for it! When starting something new, it’s so easy to second guess yourself and feel intimidated by all the things you “should know”. But the truth is, most of us don’t know what we’re doing and you learn so much as you go! Don’t be afraid to get involved in your community and reach out to other like minded people to help encourage your journey! Also, celebrate your victories! Every small step in any business deserves celebrating!

Based in British Columbia, Janis of UnfetteredCo creates works of art that you’ve never seen before in the world of macrame. Her body of work includes macrame mushrooms popping out of animal skulls, celestial wall hangings covered in planets and stars, and old-fashioned owls that harken back to the heyday of macrame.

Follow the UnfetteredCo on Instagram for inspiration from this expert fiber artist, and for her musings on self, social media, and other topics. Visit her Etsy store and find everything you need to create works of macrame art for yourself.

A Chat With Janis of @unfetteredco

Q: How long have you been creating macrame pieces?

A: I started creating macrame just under 5 years ago.

Q: What inspired you to start?

A: Having just taken a beginner macrame workshop locally, I was completely obsessed with knotting! Macrame honestly just swept me in, and that came as a surprise because I figured it would just be a fun, creative, and therapeutic new hobby. But instead, it took over every corner of my life, home, and heart.

Q: Where do you draw your inspiration from?

A: I draw inspiration from other expressive mediums: especially illustration, embroidery, sculpture, tattoo, and philosophy. And while I suppose it’s a massive cliche at this point, I have to say that I also draw endless inspiration from nature. Living in the Pacific Northwest, I have the great fortune of wandering coasts and forests where living (and dead) things abound.

Q: Where are you located?

A: I live in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, Canada

Q: Any favorite artists/makers you'd like to shout out that inspire you?

A: Absolutely! Sandra de Groot (@atelierchaos), Ellen Jewet (@ellenjewet), Teagan White (@teaganwh), Dave Knight (#secondstreettattoo), Terry Watson (@tieoneoncreative), Vanessa Baragao (@vanessabarragao_work), Roman Booteen (@romanbooteen). I’m also just really inspired by anyone who takes time out of their day to make something! It doesn’t have to be grand or impressive; but just putting the work into using those creative parts of the brain is an inspiring—and world changing—endeavor.

Q: Any favorite yarn or materials brands?

A: I use entirely recycled cotton in my work because I really value sustainability and waste reduction. All of my materials are from @unfetteredsupply, which is the fiber art supply company that my partner and I built. You can find us on Etsy (as Unfettered Co) We offer recycled cotton, handmade metal frames, yarns, ribbons, tools and more ;)

Q: Anything else you want to add?

A: Just want to add a thank you for putting fiber art, and macrame, in the public eye! It’s exciting to watch the profile of fiber art grow enormously and I’m thrilled to be a small part of that.
